All of it leading him to the lifestyle he really loved, which was being outdoors, away from the big city. John's work at Alderridge was ideal for someone who relished camping and kayaking, hunting and fishing. He loved to wrap his mind around maps and he knew every body of water harboring fish in central Washington. He even built his own spay rod for fly-fishing. His girls remember camping trips and hikes when they were growing up and of course, that steady diet of fish.

 

Not only did his job at Alderridge afford John the opportunity to be outside a lot, it was a great place to have his dog Dolly, also known as "Dolly Girl." She had the prime place in the front seat of his pick­up - barely making room for Sandi when she rode along. John would stop at the drive-in and buy Dolly a hamburger or corn dog, but .99 was his limit. Not that John was cheap. But for him, simple was better. In fact, living in the vineyard cultivated a sedentary lifestyle, until he met Sandi six years ago. He said they complemented each other well, because she liked to go and do things and she drew him out. Her organization and decisive manner was a good counter for his laid-back style and ponderous decision­making. And of course, the constant supply of chocolate chip mint ice cream in her freezer didn't hurt. She in turn appreciated his intellect and their ability to have an intelligent conversation.

    Sandi values honesty, so John's authenticity endeared him to her.They knew they were meant for each other after they passed the trip test (more than 3 days) and the daughter test. John observed Sandi with his daughters and discovered that she was just as genuine and natural with them as she was with him. In turn, she could see that he was a nurturing father who cared deeply for his daughters and encouraged them in healthy ways. John's siblings say Tessa and Liz had their dad wrapped around their fingers. He was very proud of them and they in turn affirm that nobody could have been a better father.It wasn't just with his children that John shared his love. His subterranean faith manifested itself in a desire to make everyone feel special. No matter who you were, he would listen carefully and offer his support.
